The September 27th Homecoming celebration at the Chapter House was a total success! Over 150 alumni, actives, guests and friends of the Chapter came to celebrate and dedicate two first-floor rooms to two of our distinguished alumni:

    • The Library was dedicated to Lawrence (Larry) G. Foster '48 (1925-2013) for his years of commitment to Pi Chapter and service to the University.
    • The Foyer was dedicated to James R. Rummel '76 who spearheaded the re-instituted House Corporation's efforts in revitalizing Pi Chapter while serving as the corporation's chairman for numerous years.

We were pleased to have members of the Foster family and several University officials join us. Barbara Dewey, Dean of University Libraries and Scholarly Communications; Marie Hardin, Dean of the College of Communications; Ann Major, Advisor Foster Chapter PRSSA; and Sue Paterno, a long-time friend of the Foster family all spoke about Larry Foster. A letter honoring him from Dr. Rodney Erickson, emeritus President of the University, was read by Dave Jones '54.

James Rummel was honored with remarks from TKE Alumni Bob Luther '73, Bryon Deysher '77 and Christopher Suroviec '76. Each spoke of Jim’s professional accomplishments, his years of dedication to Pi Chapter and his persistent encouragement to the actives for higher levels of achievement and social responsibility.

The chapter was also given the "Top TKE" Large Chapter Award to Pi for 2013-14 for the first time since 1969. The return of the Top TKE Award to Pi is a fitting conclusion to the recent fund drive and continued evidence of the commitment and achievement of our actives and alumni in keeping Pi Chapter a house of honor at both the national and university levels.

New solid oak and glass paneled doors leading into the Foster Library from the living room were also unveiled. These doors were a gift honoring Larry Foster and presented by five members of the Class of '48: Bill Dickerson, Bob Poindexter, Jim Russell, Jim Seitzer, Bob Mechling and the House Corporation. Displayed in the Library were recently received pieces of memorabilia which include: the original hard-bound copy of the first 17 editions of the World War II “Pieces of Pi” newsletters from December 1943 through December 1946; a 1939-40 TKE Guide; formal group photos of the classes of 1945, 1946, 1947, 1948 and a 1981 homecoming photo of 1940-1950s era alumni. These are now permanently housed in the Library’s display case.

Preceded by an open house/cocktail hour, the dedications were followed by a scrumptious buffet prepared by the Chapter's new professional food service staff of College Fresh. Dessert for the event included several "Top TKE" cakes decorated with edible graphics of the award.

Upon arrival the guests were greeted by the Classes of the 1970s TKE "Beast" Tailgate Bus parked in the rear parking lot and recently refitted with new Penn State and TKE graphics.

Guests stayed well into the early evening, touring recent renovations and enjoying the company of the actives. The event was another fine example of the special days we all have known and come to expect at Pi TKE. If you were unable to attend, you missed a special homecoming celebration. Start thinking about your trip back to celebrate next year’s event.
